As we discussed in this article, the bathroom can be one of the most dangerous places in the home. After all, the bathroom is one of the most common places in the house to have wet floors, and it also has a number of tripping hazards such as toilet mats and bath mats. Add the fact that it’s a tight space that forces people to move in odd ways and you have a recipe for disaster for the elderly or those with disabilities.

We want to help you make the bathroom as safe as possible, and that’s why we carry some of the best home care products for bathroom safety. Let’s take a look at some handicap accessories that no one in need should be without.

Grab Bars

Grab bars are one of the simplest yet most important pieces of safety equipment that can be added to a bathroom. They not only help people stand up and sit down, but they can prevent serious injury if a person starts to fall. Even if a person has weak arms, a grab bar can help. After all, something that gives support is better than having no support at all.

It’s always better to have more grab bars than fewer. Place one in the bath, one just outside the bath (to help while they step over the lip of the tub), and one or two near the toilet.

Shower Chair

When you’re young, bath time can be playtime; it’s like having your own swimming pool! For parents, bath time can be time to relax away from the worries of the world. But for the elderly, a bath means getting down into an awkward position that might be extremely difficult to get up from.

It’s no wonder that most people who have trouble getting up from the floor choose to go with a shower chair instead of taking a bath. A shower chair allows them to get up from a much easier position (especially when combined with the grab bars mentioned above). These can be simple benches with adjustable legs or complete chairs with backs and armrests.

Let’s not forget about standing endurance, either. Standing in a shower for 10 minutes can be difficult for some people, even if they’re able to stand on their own for shorter periods of time. Others with back problems might be able to walk around on their own but find it difficult to stand in one spot for more than minute. Shower seats can change all of that for them.

Elevated Toilet Seats

Getting up from a low toilet seat can be difficult, even with grab bars. Elevated toilet seats can be an excellent solution, because they ensure that the person doesn’t have to get so low in the first place. There are many varieties, depending on the needs of the elderly person and those whom they are living with. For instance, there are hinged versions so that the seat can be easily moved out of the way to accommodate other people in the house. There are also models that have their own arms that work as additional grab handles. Simply click that link above and we bet we have what you need.

Like we said, bathrooms can be dangerous, and that’s why it’s so important to have the right bathroom safety accessories. Find a complete list of what we offer in bathroom home care products right here.

In our previous article we detailed some of the biggest advantages that manual wheelchairs have over electric wheelchairs. After all, they’re easy to push, they don’t have to be charged up, and they’re certainly a lot lighter and less bulky when you want to drop one in a car.

So it’s time to find that perfect manual wheelchair for you, right, since manual wheelchairs are obviously better than electric ones? Not so fast. While most everyone who needs a mobility aid can benefit from a manual wheelchair, it can be hard to beat an electric one in certain circumstances. Let’s take a look at a few advantages that electric wheelchairs have over manual ones.

Electric Wheelchairs Do The Work

The most obvious reason that electric wheelchairs beat manual ones is that they do all the work it takes to get someone from place to place. While many people could get themselves around with a manual wheelchair, there are some hills and inclines that are hard for just about everyone.

Of course, there are quite a few people who simply don’t have the arm strength or ability to use their hands that it takes to work a manual wheelchair. Without a motorized wheelchair, they would always require someone to move them around, while an electric wheelchair gives them freedom that wheelchair-bound people from 30 years ago couldn’t experience.

Electric Wheelchairs Stop Accidental Rolling

Once a manual wheelchair gets rolling, it can be hard to stop. Whether it’s on a ramp or in San Francisco, a manual wheelchair can be prevented from rolling if you put the brakes on but are much harder to stop once they get rolling.

Electric wheelchairs, on the other hand, can be slowed down and stopped with just the movement of the joystick. The power that makes it go is also an excellent way of making it stop.

They’re More Sturdy

Weight can be one of the most daunting aspects of power wheelchairs, especially if you plan to take it anywhere. But that weight can also be a positive. Because the center of gravity is lower with electric wheelchairs, they’re much more difficult to tip over. This means that they’re more solid when it comes to front-to-back tipping and side-to-side tipping. Weight has its advantages.

They Offer Constant Power

If you’re at a park and in a manual wheelchair, you or the person pushing you has to take into account the trip back to the starting point. A person who has a lot energy at the start can get very tired moving a wheelchair around before too long. That means an exhausting trip back.

Electric wheelchairs, on the other hand, give you their full energy until they run out completely. No one is tired at the end of the park trip!

The fact is, both manual and electric wheelchairs have their place in the world. Depending on the reason you need a wheelchair in the first place, the choice might be obvious. If you’re looking for a power wheelchair that gets you where you need to go in style, check them out right here.

When most people think of electric wheelchairs, they tend to think of them as “better.” After all, wheelchairs have been around in some form or another for hundreds of years, so the electric ones of today must be an improvement, right?

While we love electric wheelchairs and carry quite a few of them, there’s no doubt that the manual wheelchairs still have quite a few advantages that power wheelchairs can’t beat. Let’s take a look at why you might want to have a lightweight wheelchair around even if you own a motorized wheelchair.

You Don’t Have To Charge Manual Wheelchairs

Motorized wheelchairs have to be plugged in so that that battery can recharge. If you forget to plug it in the night before, you might only get halfway to your destination before you hear that sickening whine of the battery giving out.

Manual wheelchairs, on the other hand, can always be used because they have no battery. That’s what makes them a great backup should you find yourself with a dead battery. And if you do...

Others Can Push

Let’s say you get halfway across a public park and your battery gives out on your power wheelchair. Even if you have someone along with you, it’s unlikely that they’ll be able to push you and your wheelchair around. Many power wheelchair don’t even have handles on the back anymore, meaning that there’s no good way for someone to grab on and push. Not only that, but power wheelchairs are considerably heavier than manual wheelchairs, thanks in part to the weight of the battery. If there’s any incline whatsoever, even an able-bodied companion can have trouble pushing you back to the car.

With a manual wheelchair, you can get yourself around with your own arm power. And if your arms give out halfway across the park, it’s easy for someone to casually take over and move you around.

Drop Them Into A Car

Like we said, motorized wheelchairs are heavy. Not only that, but they’re also oversized and heavy. That’s great for stability, but it makes them very difficult to take across town. Power wheelchairs often require something the size of a van to accommodate their size, and many are so heavy that you actually need a wheelchair ramp or wheelchair lift.

How about a manual wheelchair? Most able-bodied people can easily fold it up and drop it in the trunk of your typical passenger vehicle, even if it’s a compact car.

They Cause Less Damage

It doesn’t matter whether you have a lightweight wheelchair or an electric wheelchair, because they’ll both get away from you at one time or another. Maybe you bump into someone in a narrow department store aisle, or you get moving a bit too fast on a downslope. When that happens, the force behind a heavy electric is going to be much more than that behind a manual chair. Trust us, people would rather have their feet run over by a manual wheelchair than one packing a heavy battery!

Electric wheelchair have their place, but everyone should have a manual backup when certain needs arise.
Where To Wear The Uni-flo2 Cannula

In our previous article we told you all about the amazing benefits of the Uni-flo2 cannula. This cannula is made from only a single tube instead of two while still delivering the exact same amount of air as a traditional cannula. For most people the biggest benefit is that it looks better than every other cannula out there. Not only that, but because it only touches half of your face on any given day, it rubs against only half the amount of skin from traditional cannulas. It’s also half the weight, and the memory stabilization system means that that it contours to the face better than any other breathing assist tube out there.

So, this cannula is obviously more comfortable, and it looks better to boot! But it’s not just comfortable in a “sitting around the house” sort of way. Let’s take a look at how this home care product can make your life even more active.

Sports

Playing a sport when you’re in need of supplemental oxygen is a catch-22. While the activity makes you need oxygen even more than ever, there’s no time when you’d rather be without your tubes than when you’re playing sports!

While you might not win any Olympic events when wearing this cannula, the Uni-flo2 can certainly free you up to move much more than you can with a regular cannula. First off all, it’s much easier to move the tube to the back, considering that you’re only dealing with one tube that doesn’t require being in the front after it hangs from the ear. This can free the wearer up for light games of golf, tennis, fishing, or yoga. It’s nice to have fewer tubes to deal with in any activity where you have to use your arms.

Be Less Self-Conscious At Parties

There’s no shame in wearing a cannula, but people who wear the Uni-Flo2 get the added benefit of being able to hide it better than those with a traditional cannula. It’s simply not as obvious as the regular tubes. Even better, you can position yourself at a party so that most candid photos only show the side of your face without the cannula!

Garden Without Snagging

One major problem with traditional cannulas is that they are a closed loop, meaning that they are more likely to get caught during activities. When you’re gardening, it flops forward and can get caught on a branch, meaning that it yanks against your ears and gets rammed into your nose whenever you pull back.

The single-tube of the Uni-flo2 doesn’t come away from your chest every time you lean forward, so it’s less likely to get caught when you're gardening or participating in the sports that we mentioned above.

Wear It To Bed

We mentioned this in the previous blog, but it bears repeating. Wearing a Uni-flo2 to bed is so much more comfortable than a regular cannula. Because it’s not a closed loop, you don’t have to worry about it noosing around your neck. If you’re a side-sleeper, you also don’t have to worry about the tube being uncomfortably folded under your ear all night; just put it behind the opposite ear!

Once you use a Uni-flo2 cannula, it’s unlikely that a regular one will ever suffice. Check out this amazing home care product today!

Cannulas aren’t something that anyone wants to wear, but they are a fact of life for those who are on supplemental oxygen. So if a medical device becomes as much a part of your daily dressing routine as putting on pants or a blouse, shouldn’t it be as comfortable as possible? We think so, and that’s why we’re so proud to carry the Uni-flo2.

The Uni-flo2 cannula is so innovative because it took a simple device that was decades old and completely reimagined it. Why should people have to live with mediocre products that they’re using every day? They shouldn’t, and that’s why the the Uni-flo2 was invented. Let’s take a look at some of the innovations that have been put into this new oxygen cannula.

Single Airway

Here’s the most obvious difference between the Uni-flo2 and a traditional cannula, because it’s the most visual. Take one look at the Uni-flo2 and you’ll notice that it only has a single airway, which still delivers up to 6 LPM of supplemental oxygen from you tank. This single airway is important because it is half as noticeable than a traditional cannula.

Interchangeable

The Uni-flo2 is interchangeable between each nostril, which means that you’ll be able to decide on which side of your face you’d like to wear it on a particular day. This might depend on the activity of the day — for instance, if you’re playing tennis or casting with a fishing pole. But you can also switch it back and forth every other day, meaning that each nostril will only receive half the irritation it would with a traditional cannula. Not only will your nostril thank you, so will your face and ears. That’s because there’s…

Less Skin Contact

Think about it...with a single airway tube instead of two, only half of your face is in contact with the Uni-flo2 at any time. And just like your nostril, the skin of your cheekbones will be rubbed half of much as usual, for the simple reason that you’ll be able to switch the side the cannula touches each day. Even plastic tubes can cause skin irritation, so it’s important to keep the contact down as much as possible.

Less Weight

If you’ve been wearing a cannula, you know that even something as lightweight as a plastic tube can feel heavy on the ears after extended wear. The amazing part of the Uni-flo2 is that, since it contains only a single airway tube, you’ll only have half as much tube weight over your ear, and it’s over only once ear. (In some ways, that makes it just 25% of the weight and wear on your ears.) You can even switch between ears halfway through the day if you wish!

Look Less like You’re In The Hospital

A hospital is the most common place where supplemental oxygen is found and the only place that most people find themselves experiencing its use. So it’s not surprising that cannulas are associated with hospitals.

There’s no doubt that many people dislike wearing a cannula because it makes them appear as if they’ve just been released from the hospital. So why not break that association by getting something that people don’t recognize, something that’s only over half of your face and will be invisible if someone if looking at your profile? That’s the Uni-flo2.

Single Tubes Make Sleeping Easier

Most people who require supplemental oxygen during the day also need it at night. But those who sleep with cannulas know that one of the most annoying aspects is being able to get comfortable while wearing one to bed. Side sleepers are always going to be pinching the tube between their ear and pillow, making it difficult to sleep. And the more tubes you’re wearing, such as with a two-tube traditional cannula, the more likely you are to get tangled up in them, leading to the very uncomfortable “noosing” problem.

A single tube like that found on the Uni-flo2 can make sleeping so much easier. The Uni-flo2 comes with two patches to help keep it in place when you're sleeping or engaged in exercise. If you need additional patches, that’s no problem. Choice Mobility also carries replacement cannula patches so that you’ll always have the adhesive you need.

Memory Stabilization System

Most of the time you won’t be needing patches due to a special feature you won’t find in other tubes. The aspect of the Uni-flo2 that puts it above others is that the tube has a memory stabilization system. That’s a fancy way of saying that the tube not only contours to the face better, but it also is better at keeping that shape. This means that the cannula is less likely to come away from the face, causing a gap that makes it more noticeable or get in the way of eyeglasses.

That’s not all. This special guidance system can also help reduce strain point on parts of the face that might normally be rubbed with a traditional cannula. In other words, if you bend this cannula in a way that will get it out of your way, the memory stabilization system will keep it in that position better than a traditional plastic tube.

It’s As Easy To Use As Any Other Cannula

If you’re on prescription oxygen, you’ve been instructed in the use of cannulas and the portable oxygen tanks. That means that you’re also ready to use the Uni-flo2 as well! After all, it might be a revolutionary cannula, but it still works on many of the basic principles that allow you to get oxygen from your tank to your lungs. If you’re interested in seeing just how easy our product is to use, check out the video at the bottom of this page.

If you’re on supplemental oxygen, there’s a good chance that you’ll be wearing it for some time to come. If that’s the case, shouldn’t you take control of your health and wear something that’s lighter, less intrusive, and more comfortable? It only makes sense to get a cannula that works with your lifestyle, so check out the Uni-flo2 today!

Are All Lift Chairs the Same?

Lift chairs are very important in the lives of those who have trouble rising from a seated position. While they might be able to get out of a traditional chair with considerable effort, lift chairs help get them on their feet and prevent falls. This is an excellent option for those with leg and hip problems, as well as those who might suffer from dizziness as they try to get up.

At Choice Mobility we have over 40 different varieties in lift chairs to choose from, and as you look through them we’re sure you can find on that will meet your needs and your price point. Let’s take a look at the similarities and differences among our many lift chairs

SIMILARITIES

They All Plug In

This one might be obvious, but it’s a good reminder that you’ll be dealing with a cord when you receive your new lift chair. The pictures you’ll see hide the cords very well, but remember that having your chair out in the middle of the room might not be an option. As you rearrange your room getting ready for your new chair, don’t forget that you’ll have to have a plug nearby.

They All Lift

Another obvious one, but why not say it? There are many variations in our lift chairs which you’ll read about below, but one thing they all have in common is that they lift you from a seated position as they move you into a standing position. Unless you choose otherwise, each chair will stay in that standing position until you return.

They All Recline and Support the Feet

When our chart says 2-position, it’s actually better than it sounds. The normal “chair” position isn’t counted as a position, so the two additional positions you get are lifting and reclining. All of our lift chairs recline slightly at the back as the feet are lifted with the ottoman.

DIFFERENCES

The Number of Positions

How many positions your chair can attain is one of the biggest factors you’ll have to consider. The two-position chairs attain the three positions we mentioned above, while 3-position chairs add napping to their abilities. The Infinite model added two more positions, including relaxing and sleeping, while the Zero Gravity models offer even more positions as noted in the chart below.

The Weight Lifting Ability

We understand that some people have trouble getting into a standing position because of excess weight. That’s why we carry bariatric lift chairs that are capable of lifting up to 600 pounds comfortably.

Fabric

We want to make sure that your new lift chair fits as seamlessly as possible into the decor of your room. That’s why we allow you to pick the fabric that comes on your new chair. Depending on the model, you might have up to 50 fabrics to choose from!

Side Pocket

It might seem like a little addition, but you’ll be surprised as how much you’ll use the side pocket of these lifting chairs. Most of our lift chairs (but not all) come with a side pocket that is great for magazine, remote controls, and the lifting control mechanism itself.

As of this writing we have 46 lift chairs to choose from. We’re sure you can find that perfect lift chair for you to make your life easier!

Many people avoid the transition to a wheelchair for a long as possible. After all, it can be a huge hit to a person’s ego when they’re no longer able to get themselves around as easily as before. But once they get in their chair and find out what they’re actually able to get around with more ease, many of them really take the idea of having their own set of wheels.

With this new form of mobility come other advantages as well. Their new vehicle can become a chariot, customized with wheelchair accessories that are helpful and those that increase safety. Let’s take a look at some of the best wheelchair accessories we offer

Anti-Tippers

When you look at the early versions of wheelchairs, the large wheels were in front and the small ones were in back. While that certainly prevented them from tipping backwards, it meant that wheelchair users were more likely to tip forward!

Now that wheelchair wheels are on the back, you need a good way to ensure you won’t end up on you back. If your new wheelchair didn’t come with anti-tippers, these are some of the first wheelchair accessories you should invest in. Even if your chair did come with anti tippers, you might want to upgrades to some that are nicer or better meet your needs. For instance, you might have once with bumpers but would rather have one with wheels (a great idea if you do like popping a wheelie or doing tricks now and then!) Some are adjustable so that you can decide exactly how far back you’re going to tip before your fall is arrested. It’s your wheelchair, so make it do what you want it to!

Wheelchair Seat Cushions

One of the biggest adjustments you’ll likely have to get used to when you start making extensive use of a wheelchair is the amount of sitting you’ll be doing. While a bare wheelchair seat might be okay for short trips, a dedicated seat cushion is a must if you’re going to be spending any measureable time sitting in the chair.

Choice Mobility carries over 15 different seat cushions, many of them gel or foam cushions so that time in the wheelchair feels a lot better on both the buttocks and the spine, which also helps the shoulders feel better. And speaking of the spine...

Back Cushions

Much like seat cushions, wheelchair back cushions are incredibly important the longer you spend in the chair, whether you’re mobile or simply reading a book. These offer excellent lumbar support so that your posture is kept in a more comfortable, healthy position.

If the back support isn’t giving you enough options, we also carry adjustable tension back cushions so that you can decide just how much give there is when you sit down in the chair.

Organizers

The wheelchair is a vehicle, so why not make it do as much work as it possibly can? With the wheelchair organizers, you’ll be able to take things with you, like books, magazines, wallets, medications, and so much more. Hey, stick the remote control in there and always have control of the television!

New Wheels

If you get really good with moving your own wheelchair around, you’re going to quickly find that the standard wheelchair wheels are pretty...standard. With this Super Hemi wheel kit from Drive, you’ll be able to take control of your chair like never before, moving faster and taking turns more efficiently. Let your chair free you!

Here at Choice Mobility, we want to make your time a wheelchair as safe, comfortable, and, yes, fun as possible. Check out all of our wheelchair accessories right here!

Mobility aids have changed considerably over the years, decades, and centuries. In fact, the first wheelchair used for those unable to walk goes back to 200 BC, and the more “modern” push wheelchair is nearly 300 years old.

So while people having been creating mobility aids for a very long time, we’re living in a truly wonderful time where people can get themselves around better than ever, whether they aren’t able to walk due to an injury, age, or disability since birth. The best part is, electric mobility scooters, power wheelchairs, and traditional wheelchairs all help to benefit a person physically as well as mentally. Let’s take a look at how mobility aids improve the lives of those who use them.

HELPING THEM PHYSICALLY

They Get Fresh Air

People aren’t meant to stay in one place for too long. So when a person lies in bed all day, they’re not getting out to feel the breeze or take fresh air into their lungs.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, “scientific evidence has indicated that the air within homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities.” It also notes that most people tend to spend about 90% of their time indoors, meaning that damage to the lungs can be compounded.

Now imagine how much worse that might be for someone who is bedridden and spends 99% of their time indoors. Getting outdoors is a great way to help someone breathe more easily. It also helps their mood, but we’ll get to that in a moment.

Sunlight Helps The Bones

Let’s not forget about the benefits of sunlight. Sunlight helps the body form vitamin D, which is vital in calcium absorption and bone growth / maintenance. This is especially important for those who aren’t strengthening their bones by placing weight on them.

It Helps Develop or Maintain Muscles

Using a mobility device helps to develop muscle tone. For your average roll-around-the-house lightweight wheelchair, the reason for increased muscle is obvious: the arms get stronger as a person wheels themselves around manually. But they are also keeping their muscles more limber as they move from mobility device to mobility device. For instance, someone who’s heading to the car might support themselves as they are lowered into the car’s seat, then lift themselves once more to hop onto their electric wheelchair.

Avoid Weight Gain

Staying in bed or in the La-Z-Boy all day is one way that some people experience weight gain. Movement in any form is preferable to a sedentary lifestyle, even if that movement comes from an electric scooter. The more you move, the more you do, and that can help to burn calories.

HELPING THEM MENTALLY

Avoid Weight Loss

Weight is one of those aspects of having a disability that can go either way. While inactivity can lead to weight gain, it can also lead to weight loss. Staying in bed can lead to depression, which can lead to excessive eating in some but a cessation of eating in others. Being able to get up and around with a mobility device can go a long way to helping someone avoid depression and excessive weight loss.

They Get Fresh Air

Didn’t we already cover this one? We most certainly did. But this time we’re discussing the mental boost that getting outside can do for someone. Most everyone loves to be in nature, and even a trip to the backyard with the proper mobility device can go a long way to boosting mood. Those with disabilities can still engage in a certain gardening activities; the added muscles they get from a manual wheelchair can make pruning even easier!

Of course, sunlight can’t be ignored as a mood booster. Sunlight makes the brain release serotonin, one of our feel-good chemicals. It’s pretty obvious that sunlight and fresh air helps mentally as well as physically.

It Helps Them Help Themselves

There aren’t many people who enjoy feeling helpless. Most of us don’t mind accepting a little help, but we certainly don’t want to rely on others for everything we do. The word ego often takes on a negative connotation, but ego is one thing that makes us want to take care of ourselves. And if we can’t take care of ourselves, we also can’t take care of other people, something that most people enjoy.

That’s why getting oneself around in a mobility device is important. When a disabled person is able to move themselves around it becomes a huge boost to their mental health because they’re able to take care of at least one aspect of their lives — getting around — with much more ease. It’s not something that most people can relate to unless they’ve been immobile for an extended period of time, but it helps a disabled person’s mood immensely.

Building a Social Life

A person who stays at home all day has to rely on others to come visit them, and if those visits start to wane then they can suffer a one-two punch: they can feel abandoned, and they’re not interacting with others socially. Humans are social creatures, and that means that they’re meant to talk to other people. Voices coming from the TV can only stave off this need for so long.

Taking control of their own mobility with an electric wheelchair or motorized scooter is a great way for people who have been injured to “get back out there.” Simply heading down the sidewalk or moving about the apartment grounds can go a long way to meeting other people and interacting with them on a daily basis.

The fact is, mobility aids help in ways that most people never imagine, improving moods and bodies of those who can’t get around on their own. At Choice Mobility, we’re proud to be a part of the long heritage of mobility and the many ways that it helps those in need. Whether they’re in Chicago or somewhere across the country, we’re here to help those who still live on their own or live in nursing homes. If you or someone you know needs the best in power wheelchairs, electric scooters, or manual wheelchairs, we’re ready to help. Check them out today!

Here at Choice Mobility, we’re not just about mobility aids to help people when they’re out of the house. We’re also here to help people when they’re in their home, including lift chair recliners and ramps that allow wheelchairs to move throughout the house.

While we love helping people keep their independence around the home, there is one place that causes the elderly to have more accidents than any other: the bathroom. Why is it such a dangerous space? Let’s take a look at how our home care products can help an older person improve bathroom safety.

Wet Floors

Bathrooms are the area of a home that are most likely to have water on the floors. While the kitchen has a single sink dispensing water, bathrooms have three water-providing devices that can make the floor slick: the sink, the shower/tub, and the toilet. That’s three times the amount of fixtures that can leak or spray.

Good thing there are bath mats, right? Well...

Bath Mats

Bath mats and toilet rugs can go a long way to absorbing excess water that falls on the floor. Unfortunately, they can cause problems themselves by becoming tripping hazards. People with low energy tend to shuffle their feet more, meaning that the toes don’t rise above the mat. When that happens, the mat often folds over on top of itself, causing an even greater tripping hazard. And what happens when they try to fix it on their own? They either put themselves on one foot and try to kick it back, or they bend over and risk tumbling. Grab handles near the toilet or shower can help

Our suggestion? Make sure that the bath mats are thin enough so that they don’t get kicked or rolled. Also, you can help your loved one install adhesive strips that can help to hold the corners down so that they don’t become a tripping hazard.

Tight Spaces Are Awkward

Bathrooms tend to be the smallest room of a house, and when you’re young that doesn’t really matter. Turning from the sink to the towel rack behind you is a simple task that you don’t even have to think about. But when you get older a simple turn can be tricky. Think about it: when you walk forward, the feet tend to stay out of the way. But when you do a 180-degree turn, it’s easy for feet to bump into each other and cause a fall. Once again, grab handles are a great way to help someone move around the confined space of a bathroom, because they are often more secure than the average towel rack that someone will grab during a fall.

Bathrooms Force You Into Strange Positions

When you look at bathrooms, it becomes pretty obvious that they were built with young people in mind. Unfortunately, this makes it all the more difficult for the elderly to perform all the necessary daily tasks. First of all, toilets are lower to the ground than most chairs, making it difficult to stand up. Second, sinks make the average person lean forward in an awkward position, which might cause them to become unbalanced. This is made all the worse by slick floors or bath mats that don’t grab the floor. Finally, stepping into a shower or bath can be almost impossible for someone who requires mobility aids, mostly because of the tall lip on the side of the tub. Once again, grab bars can be an excellent bathroom safety accessory to help the elderly move about more easily.

Standing Up

One of the hardest tasks for an older person to perform in a bathroom is simply standing up. Raised toilet seats are certainly one of the most helpful. When in the shower, shower chairs and bath chairs are a great way to help them safely bathe themselves. The more solid things to grab hold of, the more likely they are to avoid a bad fall.

There are more bathroom safety products than you might imagine, each created to help those in need keep their independence and privacy at home. Check out the full line of products right here!

There’s a good reason that the word “mobility” is in the name of our company. We love helping seniors and those with difficulty moving get around, and that’s why we’ve amassed some of the best (and very affordable) mobility aids in the country. Let’s take a look at the variety of scooters and wheelchairs that Choice Mobility has to offer.

Scooters

We all know what motorized scooters are. They help people with mobility problems get around, and, most important, get around on their own. While they might need help getting the scooter into a vehicle (a vehicle lift can help with that), the person in a scooter has his or her freedom while they are out and about.

We have a great selection of mobility scooters in a variety of sizes. Some are three wheelers, others have four wheels. Some are for occasional use, others are great for everyday use. Take your time and find that perfect motorized scooter for your life!

Manual Wheelchairs

When most people think about manual wheelchairs, they think about a simple folding wheelchair that might be seen sitting around the hallways of a hospital. Sure, we have those, but we also have a variety that can be used at home, in nursing homes, and those that have specific purposes.

Lightweight Wheelchairs - Lightweight wheelchairs are a great option for those who are often heading out and about and don't want to deal with the weight of a scooter. They are excellent options for moving around the house, as well as folding up and heading to the mall or park.

Heavy Duty Wheelchairs - Heavy duty wheelchairs are usually reserved for hospitals and nursing homes that are dealing with bariatric patients. These chairs are wider than the average wheelchair and are specially reinforced in order to carry 700 pounds or more.

Reclining Wheelchairs - Wheelchairs often require a patient to support his or her own head, but if a patient can’t, a reclining wheelchair might be the answer. These wheelchairs have support for the head and also allow the back to recline, making the person seated able to sleep more easily without having to exit the chair.

Motorized Wheelchairs

While scooters are often used when outside the home, power wheelchairs are usually used at all times. That’s why they have to be as comfortable as possible, be absolutely reliable, and be as maneuverable as possible in the tight spaces around a house. Because they see so much use, you also want the battery to last as long as possible.

At Choice Mobility, we could have brought together a few motorized wheelchairs and called it a day. But we know that everyone who requires one has different needs, and that’s why we have over 25 options to choose from. Need one that resembles a traditional wheelchair? We have those, as well as ones that maintain their maneuverability with additional wheels and tipover prevention. We also have ones that lift so that the user can raise up to be at eye level with those around them who are standing.

No matter what type of mobility aid you’re looking for, Choice Mobility has what you’re looking for. Click those links above and find the perfect fit for you!
